Do you like table grapes? Do you like and drink wine. Every time I watch an old time movie depicting the old Roman times the people seems to be eating grapes or drinking wine. Even today, world wide, seventy to seventy five percent of the grapes that are grown is used in wine making. The rest is used as table fruit except for about two percent that is used as dried fruit such as raisins.
There are many different fruits that are used to make wine but grapes are the most often used. Grapes are one of the better choices for wine making because grapes contain all of the natural properties that is beneficial in wine making. The character of grapes are that they contain large amounts of fermentable sugars, robust flavors, and good colors in the skins. Over the years grapes growing now have been cultivated to bring out the best in aroma and flavors. When it comes to grape juices, the juice comes from a grape called “Vitis labrusca” which is native to North and South America. These grapes have loose skins that will peel off with no effort. A grape that is native to Europe along with East and Central Asia have a tight skin but is also used for the making wine. These grapes are named “Vitis vinifera” and have been introduced all over the world. As most everyone knows grapes are very nutritional with an excellent source of carbohydrates, protein, fats that are good for the health, along with being cholesterol- free.
Quite a few people grow grapes at home and make their own wine as long as they adhere to their local liquor laws. These can be small vineyards but the small Grape Growing now enthusiast follow the same procedures as the very large grape growers. Whether you are large or small you first find a spot that has the the best possible conditions for grape growing. Excellent sunlight and good drainage are the first things to consider, but check after a good rain to make sure there is no standing water that will indicate that the drainage is not good enough. One good place to plant grape vines is on a slope if you have one on your property. Planting the vines on a slope will give them very good drainage. If the slope is facing south, especially in the cooler northern regions, the grape vines will have much more exposure to the warming sunlight. Your vineyard should be very accessible because you will be tending to it every day in the growing season in order to prune, weed, and use pest controls. Your tools and water is best to be handy whenever you need them.

After you have found the right spot for your vineyard you will need to make sure the soil is ready and then build a trellis. The weight of the grape clusters are very heavy which puts a very large amount of strain on the grape vines, for which is the reason for the trellis. If you get out into the woods and countryside you will find grape vines growing on trees, posts, and fence lines. Being grapes are a perennial plant it will take about three years to produce the first crop. Build a very strong trellis because it will have to last quite along time.
You can start making your own wine once you have a good grape harvest. You could have a special wine because grapes can pick up unique aromas and flavors from the soils and your particular climate and that could be that little extra something that makes your wine more desirable than the rest.
